What's included

The Chester Grosvenor is a gem in the north of England and famous around the world, boasting five red stars which reflects its excellence throughout and Executive Chef Chef Simon Radley has held a coveted Michelin Star here for 29 consecutive years. Our fine wine Fridays are hosted by our wine school founder and Cheshire wine writer and presenter, Richard J Smith.

 

We’ll welcome you to The Gallery on the first, floor beneath the 28,000 crystal chandelier, with a glass of The Gusbourne Estate Brut Reserve before you join us in The Drawing Room for an evening of fine wine and food pairing.

 

As we begin in The Drawing Room Richard will introduce the first of our canapés paired with your first glass of fine wine and you’ll enjoy the enhanced flavours that each pairing creates as well as learning a little more about the wines and the wine regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux, arguably the two finest wine regions on earth. Throughout the evening you will enjoy different food tastings matched with three different glasses of fine wine.

 

Our fine wine selection will be served in Riedel Crystal glassware and, as always, our wines will be sourced from the best local retailers and we will provide the winemakers’ tasting notes for you to take home.

A variety of canapé tastings from Michelin Star Executive Chef Simon Radley will be served which will be paired with our fine wine selection throughout the evening.


Vegetarian and specialist dietary options are always available by prior arrangement.

Our evening wine tastings take place in The Drawing Room on the first floor. A member of The Concierge will direct you to The Gallery where we will welcome you with a glass of The Gusbourne Estate Brut Reserve vintage English Sparkling.

Your wine school host

The evening will be hosted by our Founder, Richard Smith, who will share with you some of his twenty seven plus years of knowledge of all things wine as well as some anecdotes (but alas, no secrets) from his time as a butler. Richard trained at one of the world’s finest hotels and is proud to have advised several members of the British Royal Family and a number of international heads of state and celebrities. Richard has recently been featured in The Daily Mail and Cheshire Life magazine and he regularly writes for The Taster magazine. He recently appeared at Three Wine Men in Manchester alongside TV wine legends Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin MW and has presented English and Welsh wines in partnership with Wines of Great Britain for three consecutive years at RHS Tatton Park.

In accordance with the law, all persons attending our events must be over 18 years of age. Admission will be refused if suitable age verification photo ID cannot be provided upon our request and under these circumstances we regret that a refund will be not be possible.


We strongly advise that you do not drive, however if it necessary to do so please let us know. Chargeable car parking is available in The Grosvenor Shopping Centre car park which has a direct entrance to the hotel. Free parking is available in the Market and Fountains car parks after 3pm. There is no overnight parking at these car parks so please check the signs before leaving your car.


The Chester Grosvenor is situated within a part pedestrianised zone within the city of Chester. Evenings are usually accessible to vehicles, however there are occasions when vehicle access may be restricted. If arriving by taxi or chauffeur, please ask your driver to advise the gate concierge that you are attending an event at the hotel and they will direct you to the hotel entrance.


Food allergens: we understand that some guests may have specific food allergies and we are always able to provide alternative ingredients and, if required, alternative dishes to ensure your food and wine pairing experience is enjoyable. We do require a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to the event start time to ensure our venues are able to access the appropriate ingredients and appreciate your understanding and kind assistance when this is necessary.


Sulphites: Please be aware as we are a wine school that wine is served at all our events and all wines produced do contain sulphites. We endeavour to feature wines where additional sulphites are not added by the winemaker or transporter, however UK legislation requires that all wines are correctly labeled as containing sulphites as these are produced in small quantities naturally during fermentation. If you suffer from a sulphite allergy we will be unable to offer any alternatives to wine and this must be considered before booking. We regret that a refund will not be available if we are informed of a sulphite allergy after your booking has been completed. Please refer to our full terms and conditions for further reference.

Gifting

If you’re booking for someone as a gift and would like a presentation voucher sent to you to give to them free of charge please use the special instructions box at the checkout. Please also state here if you wish your voucher to be posted in plain packaging instead of our branded envelopes.

Groups

For all our guests’ enjoyment of our intimate tasting events, we ask for your kind understating that groups joining us are limited to 6 guests. If you are a larger group we may be able to host a bespoke wine tasting event for you. Please contact us for more information.

Accessibility

The Chester Grosvenor is fully accessible for wheelchairs. Guests using the main entrance, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance of the event and we will arrange for an access ramp to be put in place in advance. For guests using the Grosvenor Shopping car park entrance, there is built in ramp access to the lift which leads to Reception.


From Reception, a member of the Concierge team should be available to assist. Please take the lift to The Gallery where our event will begin. Access from The Gallery to The Drawing Room is step free. Please contact us at least 24 hours in advance of the event to advise of access requirements in order for us to arrange an appropriate seating plan to allow comfortable access to and from The Drawing Room.
