A very warm welcome to The Wine School of Cheshire. We are widely considered the County’s foremost authority on wine tasting and wine knowledge with a wealth of expertise in the industry that spans more than a quarter of a century.
Our comprehensive schedule of wine tasting events and classes is timetabled for wine aficionados and novices alike, all of whom can enjoy themselves at every event which will completely demystify all that goes into making a good bottle of wine. You can learn what all the swirling and sniffing tells you about – and pose your questions to the experts – in an environment which is as relaxed and informal as a dinner party with friends.
Depending on which event you choose to attend, our guests can enjoy an exclusive evening out with canapés or a more intimate afternoon with a four course lunch to enjoy wine and food pairing at its best.

As well as hosting wine tastings at premium venues in Cheshire – including Restaurant 1539 at Chester Racecourse and The Chester Grosvenor, the leading hotel in our region with Michelin star cooking from Executive Chef Simon Radley – wine tastings in Alderley Edge and Knutsford take place in The Tasting Room within Corks Out Wines on Thursday and you can join us in Macclesfield at the iconic Arighi Bianchi store.
There’s a wine tasting on your doorstep, wherever you are in the county! You’ll discover some amazing wines and pick up some fun facts along the way. We do not sell wine therefore you can rest assured that we are providing the best advice without any pressure for you to buy afterwards. We always choose wines that you can find locally and at prices that won’t break the bank.
We regularly host corporate wine tasting events and we are very proud to include Marks and Spencer, ExxonMobil, Hartey Wealth Management, Airbus, Azure Collection, Molton Brown and many other organisations as our corporate clients.
We love to share our wine finds when we’re out and about: we regularly post our photos and snippets on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest! We offer our suggestions on what food to pair with the wines we find as well as where to buy. We have a YouTubechannel too!
All our wine tastings are available as gift experiences and we offer a fantastic range of gift vouchers too.
Our tutors are Richard Smith, Paul Gresty & Doug Reid: all are WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) qualified and have individual specialisms enabling us to cover all aspects of wines as well as beers and spirits.
Founder & Principal Tutor
All of our events are hosted by our founder and Cheshire resident, Richard Smith, who will share more than twenty-seven years of knowledge about all things wine – as well as a few anecdotes (but alas, no secrets!) from his time as a butler.
Richard graduated from Norwich Hotel School and further trained at the world-renowned Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner, London: a former winner of Best Hotel in the World from Condé Nast. Richard also enjoyed several years at London’s Savoy Group and Four Seasons-Regent Hotels. He is proud to include several members of the British Royal Family as well as international heads of state and a host of top celebrities among his clients.
Richard has worked with a number of organisations assisting with training and development within the hospitality industry including both Mid Cheshire & West Cheshire colleges. Richard is delighted to write the wine column for The Taster Magazine: the alternative magazine for sustainable, ethical & organic food and drink. This fantastic publication is distributed throughout the UK every quarter and is available at the cookery schools of Pru Leith, Raymond Blanc and Michel Roux Junior.
Richard has recently featured in The Daily Mail and Cheshire Life Magazine and is very proud to have most recently appeared at Three Wine Men in Manchester alongside TV wine legends Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin MW.
Doug is WSET qualified and has worked for many years within the wine industry in Cheshire. Doug brings to our events a wealth of knowledge & experience as well as his great personality which is guaranteed to add a shine to your day.
Doug’s varied career has taken him all around the UK – you’ll meet Doug regularly at our larger and corporate wine tastings.
Paul is WSET qualified and he is a specialist in whisky, beer and cider. What Paul doesn’t know about whisky really isn’t worth knowing and he’s proud to have been recently featured in Cheshire Life magazine.
Paul advises on food matching for whisky and beer and is heavily involved with the local licensed trades as well as providing advice to a major UK high street retailer. Paul grew up in Cheshire and spent several years in Scotland before returning home to Chester.
