FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

‘Wine cheers the sad, revives the old, inspires the young, makes weariness forget his toil’ · Lord Byron

If you have any questions about attending a wine tasting with us or using our website, we’ve hopefully covered it here for you. If you need some further help or have a different question, please do contact us. We’re always happy to assist in any way we can.

How do I find a wine tasting near me?

We hold wine tasting events and classes throughout Cheshire: you can join us in Chester, Alderley Edge and Knutsford or your preferred venue for a private wine tasting.

To see our full selection of events, simply click on the city or town name on our homepage or choose from the options under ‘find a wine tasting’ in our main menu. (mobile and tablet users, please select the menu icon and choose from the list.)

What type of classes do you offer and how much do they cost?

At The Wine School of Cheshire we have a wine tasting event suitable for everyone and to suit most budgets.

Our mid-week wine tasting evenings offer a superb introduction to tasting wine. These start from just £25 per person with light bites through to our Champagne & Sparkling wine tasting evenings at £35 per person. Join us at The Chester Grosvenor for fine wine evenings from £60 per person.

We regularly host a range of Saturday wine tasting afternoons: these all include a glass of fizz to welcome you and a four course lunch with an amazing selection of at least another 8 wines to try, from just £80.00 per person.

What is a wine tasting class like?

Our wine tasting events offer a balance of education, entertainment and information. Most importantly, they’re fun!

Our aim is to remove the snobbery and pretentiousness from the world of wine. There is of course wine to taste at every event as well as food to pair with some of the wines you will try on the day. This will be in the form of canapés, sharing platters or a four-course lunch or dinner, depending on the type of event you have booked. All our events are held in private dining rooms or reserved areas at premium venues so you can be yourselves and ask any questions you wish in a fun and relaxed environment and enjoy your day to the full.

Our wine tasting events and classes are open to all. You can be a complete novice or an industry expert – you’ll still enjoy a superb day or evening out with us.

How many people are there in each class?

Most of our Saturday events have a maximum of 14 places in order to maintain an intimate yet entertaining atmosphere. We have a larger capacity at Restaurant 1539 in Chester where on occasion we may accommodate a greater number of guests but not normally more than 20. If so an extra tutor is always available to ensure the same attention is given to everyone on the day. Our evening wine tastings in The Roof Lounge at Restaurant 1539 have an average capacity of 20 persons and in Alderley Edge and Knutsford we accommodate 12 guests in The Tasting Room. Fine wine tastings at The Chester Grosvenor are for a maximum of 12 guests. If you are a large group we may be able to host a bespoke wine tasting event for you. Find out more about our private wine tastings here or contact us for more information.

What should I wear?

We have no dress code. It’s important to us that you enjoy your experience and feel at home. Most people opt for smart casual, but everyone is welcome at The Wine School of Cheshire. If you’d like some further guidance, take a look through our website. All the photographs used were taken at some of our recent events.

What's included in the price?

All our events are fully inclusive.

Our Saturday events include a four-course lunch, a glass of fizz to welcome you and at least 8 more wines to try. You’ll also receive our bespoke wine tasting notes book which is yours to use on the day and take home afterwards.

Our mid-week wine tasting evenings include a glass of fizz and another 4 wines to try and canapés or sharing boards for you to enjoy wine and food pairing. For our fine wine evenings at The Chester Grosvenor please refer to each event description.

There are full details of what’s included within the product description of all of our events listed here at cheshire.wine

Who will be teaching me?

All our wine tasting classes and events are lead by our Founder and principal tutor, Richard Smith. Richard is WSET qualified and has over 25 years experience of all things wine! Richard has recently been featured in The Daily Mail and Cheshire Life magazine and he writes for The Taster magazine and Chester.com.

During our Saturday events you’ll get to meet one or two of our other WSET qualified tutors, Paul and Doug. Find out more about us here

What time is my class? Where should I go?

All our events start at different times depending on the location and type of event, therefore the start time will be indicated within the event description and the event timings will be printed on your ticket(s) too. All times are subject to change, however in the rare occasion that there are any changes, these will be confirmed by email as far in advance as possible.

We hold events throughout Cheshire: the location details of each event are clearly visible within the event title and description. You can fund out more about our venues here

How much wine do I get?

Drinking sensibly is extremely important to us. We are generous with our tasting samples to allow you to appreciate the attributes of each wine, so expect around a quarter of a standard wine glass of each wine you try.

During our Saturday events, there’s a little more wine to enjoy with each course of lunch. The cheese course is used to pair with three to four of the red wines.

In addition to the glass of fizz to welcome you, over all you can expect approximately one standard glass of wine per hour.

We do however reserve the right to refuse further wine service if we have concerns regarding an individuals alcohol tolerance or behaviour. This is for your own wellbeing as well as those around you. For further details see Guest Behaviour in our terms and conditions.

All persons attending must be 18 years of age or more in order to comply with the law. We may request photographic identification before the class commences in order to verify an individual is of legal drinking age. Should no proof of age be available the law requires us to refuse admission. Under these circumstances a refund will not be possible. Please visit www.drinkaware.co.uk for the facts.

How do I get there?

All our venues are easily accessible via public transport. We provide full details of the venue address within each event description and again on your wine tasting ticket(s). If we are aware of a major public event happening close by which may affect transport we will advise you via email a few days before with any suitable alternative routes or types of transport.

Find out more about our venues here

Can I drive to the wine tasting?

Whilst you may wish to drive to one of our events, we politely ask that you do not drive afterwards for your own safety and that of others. Driving over the legal limit is dangerous and will result in a driving ban for twelve months, a fine of up to £5,000 and the possibility a prison sentence. Find out the full facts about drink driving here. All our venues are easily accessible via public transport.

We do provide wine spittoons at all of our events. If you are planning to drive to the event and take public transport or a taxi home, please ensure you are able to make suitable overnight car parking arrangements for your vehicle prior to joining us.

Where can I park?

We strongly advise that you do not drive to a wine tasting.

If you have to drive, car parking is available free of charge at Restaurant 1539 at Chester Racecourse. (A £10 charge applies if you decide to park overnight) There are some event days where this facility will be unavailable. Parking in Chester City centre is very limited. If you are joining us at The Chester Grosvenor the hotel is situated in a predominantly pedestrianised zone within the city however taxis and chauffeurs may drop guests at the hotel entrance. Please inform the gate concierge you are attending an event at the hotel. There are car parks beneath the market and Fountains building which are free of charge after 3.00pm. Please check for the car park closing times on entry as they are not open 24 hours.

What food is included?

Wine and food pairing is one of the principal themes to all of our classes and events.

Our Saturday classes all include a four-course lunch or dinner where we pair different wines with each course. We advertise the menu as far in advance as possible, however there are occasions where this may be confirmed just a few days before the event date owing to the use of the freshest ingredients at all our venues.

Our mid-week evening wine tastings include sharing platters or canapés, paired appropriately with some of the wines you will be tasting. Our wine tastings at The Chester Grosvenor offer a bespoke gourmet theme and this will be confirmed within each event’s description.

Are there any vegetarian options?

Yes of course. It’s important to us that everyone enjoys their wine and food pairing experience and we will do our best to cater for all dietary requirements. We do ask at point of confirmation for you to let us know as early as possible if anyone in your party has any menu requirements and we would appreciate at least 24 hours notice in order for us to confirm the most suitable alternatives with the kitchen team.

Can you cater for food allergies at your events?

Yes of course. We understand that some guests may have specific food allergies and we are always able to provide alternative ingredients and, if required, alternative dishes to ensure your food and wine pairing experience is enjoyable. We do require a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to the event start time to ensure our venues are able to access the appropriate ingredients and appreciate your understanding and kind assistance when this is necessary.

Please be aware as we are a wine school that wine is served at all our events and all wines produced do contain sulphites. We endeavour to feature wines where additional sulphites are not added by the winemaker or transporter, however UK legislation requires that all wines are correctly labeled as containing sulphites as these are produced in small quantities naturally during fermentation. If you suffer from a sulphite allergy we will be unable to offer any alternatives to wine and this must be considered before booking. We regret that a refund will not be available if we are informed of a sulphite allergy after your booking has been completed. Please refer to our full terms and conditions for further reference.

Once you complete your purchase you will receive an electronic receipt as part of your confirmation email. If you have a smart phone, please retain your eTicket(s) in your phone for inspection and check-in on arrival, in the interest of the environment. I cannot attend an event - can I reschedule?

If your circumstances change and you are no longer able to attend the class you have booked for, please let us know as soon as possible. Whilst the booking is non-refundable, we can offer you the following options:

More than 30 days notice, we can transfer your booking onto another class of your choice. If no future class dates are available at that time, we can hold your place as pending until new dates are confirmed up to 60 days of the original booked class date.

Less than 30 days, you are welcome to offer your place to somebody else in your absence but please notify us before the class date. If you are unable to offer your place to someone else we will try to fill your place if the class has a waiting list, in which case you will be able to transfer to another class as per the terms above. If you are unable to offer your place to someone else or we are unable to se-sell your ticket from a waiting list, we regret that your booking will become void.

If you are able to re-book, this has to be done within 60 days of the original class date. Attending the class should be within the same 60 days.

You can view our full terms and conditions here

Why are my tickets not refundable if I cancel?

As a wine school, we sell tickets for specific wine tasting events and classes for a specific date and time. We are not like a restaurant which accepts reservations. We are an independent company which offers educational services for food and wine and we do not sell physical products, in exactly the same way that theatres, other adult education establishments, cinemas, concert venues and sporting event venues work. We understand that sometimes that a guest cannot attend their rebooked event which is why we offer the alternatives set out in our terms and conditions of booking. We ask for your understanding that we do incur costs to our suppliers which is why our cancellation terms are set out as they are and we do our very best to accommodate all changes in circumstances.

How do I buy a gift voucher?

You can buy a gift voucher online here

We will post a presentation gift voucher for you to give in person and an eVoucher copy will be attached as a PDF file. Vouchers are mailed first class free of charge to any UK address and will be mailed witin 2 working days from receipt of payment. We are unable to post vouchers to addresses outside the UK. If you would prefer the eVoucher only, ensure the recipient’s email is entered in the correct section of the checkout process and this will be sent immediately on payment. Any message will be sent exactly as typed online. Any personal messages created online will remain private and are only accessible by the voucher recipient.

Our wine tasting events start at £25 per person: you can choose gift vouchers of £25, £50, £60, £80, £100, £120, £160 & £200. You can of course buy more than one gift voucher at a time. If the recipient wishes they can upgrade to a higher priced event by paying the balance online after redeeming their voucher code.

Our gift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Our gift voucher codes can of course only be redeemed once and are not transferrable.

Should I buy a gift voucher or book someone onto a specific event?

This is of course entirely optional – if you know the recipient is available on the event date or if you are joining them, you may wish to choose a specific event date.

We would recommend a gift voucher as the best option: if the recipient is not available when you think, they will be able to book onto any event in the future up to the expiry date of the voucher. Our gift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

How do I use my gift voucher code?

Simply choose the event you wish to join and add it to the cart in the normal way. If you’d like to book an extra place to be paid for at the same event, no problem. Just add the number of places you would like and you can pay the balance at the checkout.

Click view cart and you will see where to add a coupon code. Please use lower or upper case as specified and add your personal code. The cart will be updated with the new balance to pay.

Where is my gift voucher?

Your gift voucher will have been either given to you in person or sent to you in the post (unless the sender requested an eVoucher which will have been sent to the email address they provided) with an individual voucher code. You will need this code to redeem your voucher, so it is important you keep it safe until you wish to use it. Our gift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and are not transferrable.

I have a discount code, how can I use this?

If you have a discount code, please check to find out which event this is valid for and that it is still in date for use and any terms and conditions attached to that code. Select the appropriate event and add it to your shopping cart. In the shopping cart you will be able to submit your discount code and if your code is valid the appropriate amount will be discounted from the shopping cart total. Discount codes are not valid for the purchase of gift vouchers.
